Policy Outreach
Enabling dialogue for impactful climate policy.
Translating climate knowledge into actionable policy
Many regions struggle to streamline policy execution for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Among others, this is due to the challenges of:
- Identifying and prioritising strategic actions.
- Insufficient human and financial resources to implement practical measures.
- Recognising and engaging the private sector in strategic actions.
There’s also a pressing need for better dialogue between researchers, policymakers, businesses, and civil society. This ensures policies are scientifically sound and practically implementable.
That’s why our policy events are designed to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration between these groups. By bringing people together, we facilitate cross-fertilisation of knowledge and achieve a broader, more inclusive understanding of the challenges.
MAIA policy events:
- Bringing diverse stakeholders together to accelerate climate policy development.
- Allow scientists to communicate their findings to decision-makers–increasing their impact.
- Give citizens a voice in climate policy discussions.
- Provide policymakers with cutting-edge insights from climate research and civil society perspectives, so they can craft more effective, inclusive policies addressing real-world needs.
- Promote cross-sector networking and ideas exchange.
- Identify barriers and opportunities in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
- Enable innovative approaches to climate challenges.
Bridging the gap between research, civil society, and policymaking.
We organise
Policy-Science Dialogues
These exchanges facilitate mutual learning and cross-fertilisation between policy and science actors. We organise hybrid events at local, national, and regional level, often within the framework of key gatherings like EU Sustainable Energy Week, COP, and others.
Policy-Science Dialogues bring people together to:
- Discuss transversal themes identified by climate change researchers, as well as needs, gaps, challenges, and opportunities.
- Develop transferability frameworks to support upscaling of solutions and tools
- Establish a basis for social and institutional cross-sectoral contracts to operationalise climate resilience research and exploit results that outlive the ongoing projects.
- Network and establish participatory processes at different levels).
Policy Roundtables
Our Policy Roundtables unite policymakers, institutional influences, and other forms of governance with influence at regional, national, and European levels. The aim is to understand good practices and identify bottlenecks to implementation when integrating climate research and data into policy development.
These hybrid events also consolidate, activate and strengthen the MAIA Climate Action Community, improving transfer of research results and developing dialogue and exchange among members.
Civil Assemblies
These participatory events invite society representatives to discuss climate policy design and implementation. The aim is to strengthen interactions between policymakers and civil society.
We’ll also work to identify gaps and needs in capacity building so we can provide training resources and easily accessible, reliable information. This will allow us to establish a common knowledge ground for participating society representatives, making for more fruitful discussions.
We publish: Policy Briefs
MAIA Policy Briefs integrate insights from our policy events and EU-funded climate change research projects.
Created in consultation with the European Commission, our briefs support the implementation of measures or policy reforms to enhance climate resilience. The aim is to validate knowledge and good practices to inform local, regional, national, and European policy.
We also run a systematic, participatory, and intelligence-gathering process to inform policymakers of current decisions and facilitate implementation. A report will be made available toward the end of the MAIA project.
