MAIA partner Regions4 holds its General Assembly 2024: Empowering Subnational Governments for a Sustainable Future

The annual General Assembly of Regions4 took place in Rio de Janeiro from 26 to 28 June, as part of a larger event aimed at empowering subnational governments to tackle global challenges. The assembly focused on the adoption of the ‘Rio de Janeiro Political Declaration’, which calls for a renewed UN system that includes cities and regions in decision-making processes to maximise their potential in driving sustainable development.

Regions4, a global network representing 49 regional governments from 22 countries, gathered under the theme “Empowered Regions Shaping a Sustainable, Just, and Resilient Future.” This year’s assembly emphasised the significant role of subnational governments in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Hosted by the Government of Rio de Janeiro, the event saw participation from around 100 representatives of subnational governments worldwide.

The assembly highlighted the adoption of the ‘Rio de Janeiro Declaration’ and the introduction of new political leadership within Regions4. Delegates engaged with the new leadership, welcomed new members, and visited the Rio de Janeiro Primatology Centre to learn about local biodiversity conservation efforts.

In addition, the event included the Financing Resilience International Forum, which facilitated high-level dialogues on funding opportunities for local adaptation initiatives, and to bridge the financial  gap by promoting innovative financial strategies.

Regions4’s commitment to sustainability was underscored by the implementation of the Sustainable Event International Pilot, developed in collaboration with the Basque Country and Rio de Janeiro. This initiative aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of events through best practices such as zero plastics and minimised printing.

The Regions4 General Assembly 2024 not only provided a platform for sharing solutions but also created a space for learning and collaboration, fostering a sustainable, just, and resilient future.
