The nextGEMS project is particpating in the organisation of the Digital Earths Global Hackathon from May 12 to 16, 2025. This unique global event offers climate researchers an opportunity to collaborate and advance earth system modeling. The distributed, collaborative event brings together experts from around the globe to enhance and analyse storm-resolving models.
What to expect
AThe hackathon aims to drive advances in storm-resolving models by focusing on improving and analysing their performance. Participants will collaborate on a common set of weather and climate data and tools, addressing region-specific scientific challenges.
Results and discussions will be broadcast in real-time, ensuring continuous engagement across international nodes. The event seeks to foster global collaboration among researchers to advance earth system modeling.
Organisation and timeline
Each node will host O(100) scientists, contributing to a global effort under the guidance of a steering committee and a technical group. Preparatory actions are already underway, with monthly meetings addressing technical, scientific, and logistical aspects.
How to participate
To join the Hackathon, find the node closest to you and get in touch through the provided contact points.
Program schedule
The hackathon will run from Monday afternoon to Friday morning, with the following general schedule:
- Monday afternoon: Welcome, theme updates, general information
- Tuesday to Thursday: Group work
- Friday afternoon: Work group roundup, general discussion of future steps
- Daily: General discussions and updates on highlights across nodes
Each node will determine the specific structure of their workweek.
Don’t miss this chance to contribute to cutting-edge research and collaborate with fellow climate experts!
