In May, 2024, the European Earth System Modelling project (ESM2025) held its third General Assembly and World Café workshop at the prestigious Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany. This important event brought together over 100 climate researchers from across Europe to share the latest developments in climate modelling and encourage collaboration across different areas of research.

A key focus was the progress made in linking Earth System Models (ESMs) with Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), an essential part of understanding the complex relationship between human activities and the Earth’s climate. These developments are paving the way for more accurate climate predictions and helping to assess effective strategies for both mitigating and adapting to climate change.

The World Café workshop, held alongside the General Assembly, further facilitated this knowledge exchange. By engaging directly with users of ESM2025 model results, such as researchers from the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP) and Tipping Point Model Intercomparison Project (TIPMIP), the project team gained a better understanding of how their research can serve communities that are modelling climate change impacts.

Discussions covered crucial topics, such as improving the ESM-impact modelling workflow, making better use of emission-driven simulations, and using multiple ESM realisations to better assess the impact of climate change on a regional level. These insights will be invaluable in refining ESM2025 models and ensuring that they remain at the forefront of climate research, informing effective communication and education strategies to address the pressing issue of climate change.
