This online workshop was held on April 9, 2024, was part of the European project ‘Partnerships for Regional Innovation’ and was implemented in collaboration with the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), the EIT Climate-KIC (Europe’s largest climate innovation initiative and community), and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC).

The workshop was part of the broader European program “Partnerships for Regional Innovation” (PRI). This new approach to place-based innovation policy builds on positive experiences from smart specialization strategies. An Attica case study was launched within the framework of this initiative.

The case of Attica, Greece, aimed to define the smart specialization (S3) sectors and the strategic priorities of the region in the field of climate adaptation. To this end, three main pillars of S3 (Tourism, Digitalization and Transport & Logistics) were mapped by the AUEB team to the relevant climate adaptation priorities.

The main purpose of the online workshop was to present the initiative and provide participants the opportunity to get to know each other, exchange views, and create partnerships related to climate change adaptation.

Specifically, the approach targeted stakeholders active in smart specialization sectors and working in fields connected or potentially connectable to the strategic goals/priorities of the Attica region for climate change adaptation.

The workshop was attended by 35 representatives from diverse sectors, such as public and governmental bodies, businesses, financial institutions, universities, research centers, and European organizations. This diversity of the participants ensured a rich and multifaceted exchange of ideas and proposals, enhancing the chances for developing and implementing innovative solutions for climate change in Attica region.

This online workshop was a crucial step in promoting the goals of PRI and strengthening cooperation among stakeholders. The ideas and proposals that emerged from the workshop are expected to significantly contribute to the successful implementation of climate change adaptation strategies in the Attica region, paving the way for further innovative actions and collaborations in the future.

Results were very positive, facilitating a first meeting between stakeholders working in the fields of smart specialization (S3) in the Attica Region. Their participation in the discussion demonstrated their strong interest in the initiative.

During the workshop, stakeholders answered questions relating to how well aligned their organisation is with the priorities of the Attica region regarding climate change adaptation. Also, the biggest challenges they encounter in their work when it comes to adaptation.

These questions sparked a very interesting discussion, leading to three key questions:

  • How can we proceed with a comprehensive approach for a sustainable transition in Attica?
  • How can we connect the climate adaptation actions that are already being implemented?
  • How can we envision each of our roles in ensuring a prosperous and climate-resilient future in Attica and in Greece in general?

These questions will inform a subsequent, future workshop, where they will be discussed in depth, and participants will have the opportunity to propose innovative solutions and collaborations.

This first online workshop was a valuable opportunity for stakeholder networking and the exchange of ideas and opinions. The level of participation and interest indicate there is potential for continued, in-depth discussions. Also, these workshops offer a forum for the creation of partnerships that can significantly contribute to climate change adaptation and the creation of a sustainable future.
