Barcelona, the first Spanish city to host “Drivers of Change”
After a highly successful kick-off in Italy this spring, our travelling exhibition continues its European tour with a one-off date in Barcelona, Spain, on the city’s buzzing San Sebastià beach, with the collaboration of the diving company Underwater Barcelona, as part of one of its bimonthly calls for beach and seabed cleaning.
This collaboration, which unites European research initiative NO SOMOS RECERCA with a local entity involved in environmental preservation, perfectly exemplifies MAIA’s purpose: to bring climate research to the street, connecting scientific results with collective and citizen action.
A fitting location
Barcelona has been chosen as the first city in Spain to host this exhibition thanks to its track record in local sustainability actions and its ability to generate synergies between science, citizens and local entities.
The exhibition will be installed between the Underwater Barcelona premises (located in the Barceloneta neighbourhood) and Sant Sebastià beach, right next to the area where the marine clean-up activity will take place. It will be available to both the clean-up participants and pedestrians and the general public, allowing everyone to get to know the tools, stories and projects that are part of the European climate response fabric.
Structured around thematic panels, the exhibition explores the multidisciplinary approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation, connecting research, environmental policies and local initiatives.
Crucially, there is a strong focus is on solutions, citizen empowerment and the need to combat misinformation and disinformation around climate change. The aim is raise awareness of climate challenges and promotes concrete solutions by combining science, art and education.

An environmental and socially significant collaboration
Underwater Barcelona is a local company and community specialising in sustainable diving, which promotes educational and marine conservation activities on the Barcelona coast. Among its most outstanding actions are the bimonthly beach and seabed cleanups, where both experienced divers and volunteers can actively participate to improve the state of the coastal environment.
The collaboration between MAIA and Underwater Barcelona is an inspiring example of what can happen when two entities with shared values get together: both understand that the fight against climate change requires a connection between knowledge and action, between research and the territory, between Europe and local communities.
A day for everyone
The event, which coincides with the celebration of World Oceans Day, invites both direct participation in the cleanup (prior registration is required through Eventbrite) and free visit to the travelling exhibition. The activities will take place between 9 am and 12 pm, with guided diving trips, waste collection, waste sorting and educational actions.
